Dr. Stern-Weisman has over 40 years of experience working with patients with hearing impairment. Originally from New York, Dr. Stern-Weisman earned her Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Bradley University, her Master's degree (M.A.) in Audiology from Northern Illinois University, and her Audiology Doctorate degree (Au.D.) from the Arizona School of Health Sciences/A.T. Still University. She became interested in Audiology due to her brother having a hearing loss that went undetected until almost the end of his kindergarten year in school. "I lived with watching my brother playing "catch-up" for missing six years of speech, language, and learning. The fact that he had a medically correctable hearing loss that went undiagnosed until almost age 6 years made watching the struggle to catch up in school even more unforgiveable. My memories of watching other children bully him for his speech and language and doing the wrong thing at the wrong time was painful. His residual struggle to catch up affected the entire family. I wanted to become an audiologist to help detect hearing loss as early as possible and assist people to take steps to lead quality lives." Prior to coming to North Suburban Hearing Service in 1994, Dr. Stern-Weisman had been employed in hospital, ENT office, and Board of Health Clinic settings. Her experience includes speech reading instruction, supervision of audiology graduate students in a university setting, and noise measurements/noise protection. She has worked with all ages from newborns to older adults. Additionally, Dr. Stern-Weisman takes part in humanitarian missions providing audiological services to people who do not have access to care. Dr. Stern-Weisman is a former Vice President of the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association, a member of the Illinois Academy of Audiology, the American Academy of Audiology, the Academy of Doctors of Audiology and the American Foundation of Audiology. In her spare time, Phyllis likes to travel, spend time with her two adult children, cats, and sits for her two grand puppies.
